Confirmation Class May 2007

CONFIRMATION
The formation process one takes to being Confirmed begins the first semester of sophomore year with an extensive introduction to prayer. In the second semester sophomore year the candidates begin the "invitation" period. The "invitation" period can be thought of as tilling the soil. In this step the candidates become familiar with what the Sacrament of Confirmation really is all about. They are prepared for entering into the rite.

The next step begins at the start of the junior year with the "Formation" period. During this time the candidates are called to be active in their faith journey. This period is likened to planting the seed. It is through this period that the candidates properly are called "Catechumens".

Then the Catechumens enter a period of "Reflection". They reflect on how the Holy Spirit is moving and working in their lives and how this connects them with the rest of the Church in a very real way. The period of Reflection is thought of as the time of tending and nuturing the plants that have grown from the seeds planted earlier. It is at the end of this period that the Catechumens are confirmed in a Mass celebrated by the Bishop of the Crookston Diocese.

The last step is never-ending and on-going through life till death. It is that of "Mission" properly called "Mystagogy". This is the reaping of the harvest and we each reap what we sowed. This is the time that we act on the reflections that we gained during the reflection period. We respond to Christ's call and we pray that God give us the strength to be the people that He calls us to be. Confirmation is not a graduation ritual; it is instead a very real opportunity to be in communion with our brothers and sisters in Christ. At Baptism we become members of the family of God and it is through Confirmation that we now actively participate as a member of the family.
